OXMANTOWN ROAD

TRAFFIC CALMING UPDATE April 2024

Dear Resident,

I write to share with you, drawings of proposed extra traffic calming measures for installation along Oxmantown Road.

As YOUR local Councillor, I have spoken with many of you in recent weeks about this issue. Now that I have called to every home on Oxmantown Road, I wanted to provide you with copies of the indicative intervention prepared by Dublin City Council to help reduce traffic speeds along your street.

I would welcome your thoughts and feedback on the proposals prepared. Please email me your views. Send that feedback to RayMcAdam@gmail.com or on WhatsApp to 086 – 847 1720.

If you would like to receive a soft copy of these drawings, email me and I’ll forward them to you.

Best Wishes,

Ray McAdam

2019 OXMANTOWN ROAD TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT SCHEME

Across 2018 and 2019, I sought your input and feedback on plans to reduce traffic speeds along Oxmantown Road. This process, ultimately, resulted in Dublin City Council installing build-outs outside 121 Oxmantown Road and opposite 44 Oxmantown Road. It was intended that the Council would undertake speed surveys within twelve months to quantify the impact of these measures on vehicular speeds.

DCC SPEED SURVEYS

Unfortunately, due to the Covid pandemic, Dublin City Council was not in a position to complete a further round of speed surveys on Oxmantown Road until 2023. The headline result from these surveys was that while speeds have dropped from an average of 58km/hr in 2017, they are still significantly above the 30km/hr speed limit at 41km/hr. Of the vehicles counted during the speed surveys along Oxmantown Road, 71.4% were found to be travelling in excess of the speed limit for the street.

ACTIONS TAKEN ON FOOT OF THE SURVEYS

Since the results of these surveys were provided to me in the Spring of last year, I have been working with Transportation Engineers to secure agreement on the preparation of additional traffic calming measures along Oxmantown Road. Late last year, those Engineers engaged with the Greening Stoneybatter team to flesh out possible interventions to further reduce traffic speeds along Oxmantown Road. Discussions between the teams focused on improving the existing build-outs, how the junction platforms could be altered and the road space narrowed as well examining how the Oxmantown Road junction with the North Circular Road could be reviewed, so as to the slow down traffic turning onto the street. Since then, designs have been prepared and further enhanced. Details of the nine interventions are outlined below for your consideration and feedback.

NEXT STEPS

Before any works take place on Oxmantown Road, agreement on the location of any further build-outs needs to be reached. The City Council will also have to complete ground surveys before finalising those locations. Completion of the detailed designs will enable indicative costings to be agreed, after which I will work to secure the necessary funding from the Chief Executive and the City Engineer. It is my objective that these traffic calming interventions be in place before the end of this year.
