Honouring Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins at Glasnevin Cemetery

Last Sunday, I had the honour of delivering the oration at the graveside of President Arthur Griffith as part of the 103rd Annual Collins–Griffith Commemoration in Glasnevin Cemetery.

This annual event is a moment of deep national reflection — a time when we gather to remember two of the most consequential figures in the foundation of our State. Arthur Griffith, founder of Sinn Féin and President of Dáil Éireann, and Michael Collins, Commander-in-Chief of the National Army and Chairman of the Provisional Government, were leaders whose vision, courage, and sacrifice shaped modern Ireland.

As Lord Mayor of Dublin, it was a privilege to pay tribute not only to their historic legacy but also to consider what their example means for us today. In my remarks, I reflected on Griffith’s role in shaping democratic politics in Ireland, Collins’ remarkable leadership in a time of crisis, and the relevance of their shared commitment to building a Republic of opportunity.
