#BikeBunker update – October 2024

At this month’s City Council meeting, I sought an update from the City Engineer on the delivery of the new Bike Bunkers across the North Inner City.
I specifically asked about the progress being made to select an operator to manage the roll-out of the expansion of the scheme. Furthermore, I wanted to know how quickly Dubliners can expect to see the first of the new Bike Bunkers being delivered across the North Inner City.
The City Engineer confirmed to me in writing that the Council’s “Traffic Division is currently utilizing the Competitive Procedure with Negotiation for the Bike Bunker project. The initial stage of this process has been successfully completed, and contact has been made with the successful parties to include them on the tender list for the next phase of the process. The Traffic Division are now progressing to the next phase, with efforts focused on selecting a service provider, as soon as possible.”
“The City Council is seeking a service to provide approximately 300 bike bunkers, which will be installed and put into service over the duration of the Framework. Once the service provider is in place following the completion of the tender stage, a preparatory phase is required, which is incorporated as part of the contract. This preparatory phase will include key elements such as: collecting data from interested customers; the selection of locations based on proximity to demand; an assessment of the suitability of proposed locations; and the submission of mapping proposals for Dublin City Council approval, and public consultation if required.”
“Timelines for the roll-out of the bike bunkers will depend on the completion of this preparatory phase, which principally includes public consultations, necessary approvals, and site readiness. Definitive timelines on the roll-out of the bike bunker’s programme will be established once this phase had been completed.”
While the City Engineer has not specified detailed timelines yet, be assured that I will continue working to have this scheme prioritised as I have done over the last eighteen months.
