Update on Dorset Street plans

Great work was undertaken with Phase 1 of the Dorset Street works plan last year. I recently sought information from Dublin City Council as to the plans for Phase 2 this year.

Dorset Phase 2 Central Median Landscape Refurbishment Works will be initiated in 2020, following the successful completion of the Phase 1 works on Drumcondra Road Lower.

The works will involve the removal of the existing hard surfacing and existing trees, that have unfortunately failed, and replacement with a planting scheme of mature trees, herbaceous perennials, bulbs and a linear hedging strip. Linear sections of hedging will create a variety of glimpses of colour and greenery for passing commuters and pedestrians. The planting area will further reduce the hard surface area thus enhancing the sustainable urban drainage within the area.  The planting will also have a filtration function, capturing air pollution and creating a healthier environment for the local community.

Phase 2 works will require a number of stakeholder engagement and public consultations. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, progress of the project has being temporarily postponed. Parks & Landscaping Services Department are currently preparing the plans to have ready for discussion once restrictions are lifted and public engagement is possible hopefully in Autumn 2020. Following the consultation phase construction drawings will be prepared to proceed to tender stage with a view to having a contractor appointed to commence works in Q1 2021.

This programme of works has been made possible due to our Fine Gael’s commitment to the North Inner City through our NEIC Initiative.
