Stoneybatter Irish Water mains replacement works.

Irish Water, working in partnership with Dublin City Council, will begin works to replace ageing water mains in Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. These works are being carried out as part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme. This is a programme underway to provide the community with a more reliable water supply, remove old damaged pipes from the water network, improve water quality and reduce leakage.

The recent storm events and subsequent water shortage in the Greater Dublin Area has illustrated how fragile the current balance is in Dublin. Leakage coupled with increased demand brought on the need for night time water restrictions causing much discomfort for our customers in the affected communities. An integral element of Irish Waters strategic approach is to reduce leakage in the network. The targeted Leakage Reduction Programme will focus on the pipe work where the leakage is high. This programme will be delivered through a number of different work packages: water mains renewal, Find and Fix, First Fix Free Scheme, pressure management, and removal of shared and back yard services.

Irish Water began works in Dublin as part of the Leakage Reduction Programme in Sandymount in late 2017 and Rathgar in February 2018, areas of Dublin where the pipes date back to the early 1900s. The works to replace problematic water mains in both communities are progressing well.  The next areas of Dublin to benefit from the Leakage Reduction Programme are Cabra, Crumlin, Drumcondra, Glasnevin and Stoneybatter . These communities will benefit from the replacement of existing ageing public water mains, many of which are old cast iron mains also built in the early 1900’s. The works will also see the replacement of old damaged service connections.

Over the coming days, I will be distributing a short leaflet detailing the works due to take place and the expected timeframe for their completion.
