BikeBunkers: Expanding Secure Cycling in Dublin

One of the biggest barriers to cycling in Dublin has always been the lack of safe, secure storage close to home. Too often, bikes are stolen or left out in the elements, discouraging people from choosing cycling as their everyday mode of transport.
That’s why I am delighted to share that Dublin City Council is now moving the BikeBunkers pilot project into a fully operational city-wide service.
A City-Wide Service
Following a comprehensive procurement process, Dublin City Council has signed a new contract with Bleeper to operate the service. Over the next decade, this framework will deliver up to 300 BikeBunkers across Dublin, with an initial four-year service contract now in place.
Bleeper will be responsible for commissioning, delivering, installing, maintaining and servicing the bike bunkers — including those already in place as part of the pilot project.
Why This Matters
The new service has been designed to:
Promote cycling by making it easier and safer to store bikes
Support city centre living with practical facilities for residents
Reduce bike theft by tackling one of the greatest concerns facing urban cyclists
How It Will Work
For new users, the registration process will be simple and transparent:
Submit your interest online
Data grouped by area to identify demand
Clusters evaluated for feasibility and available public space
Locations prioritised accordingly
Regular updates provided to applicants
An online registration form will go live shortly, and Bleeper will also promote the service through its website, social media, and local networks.
Continuity for Existing Users
Importantly, service continuity is guaranteed. Existing BikeBunker users will be contacted by Bleeper before the end of September with details about the changeover, how to access support, and the new dedicated contact channels.
A Safer Dublin
This initiative represents another important step in making Dublin a more liveable, sustainable city. By giving people the confidence that their bike is safe and secure, we can encourage more Dubliners to cycle, ease congestion, and reduce emissions — all while making our neighbourhoods more vibrant and connected.
