Beresford Street Traffic Matters – May 2024

I write to provide you with an update on my efforts to reduce the volume of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) using Beresford Street.

REQUEST TO RESTRICT HGVs ON BERESFORD STREET

Since May 5th, 2022, I have been working with Beresford Street householders to limit the number of HGVs using the street over concerns that these large vehicles are damaging homes, in particular the front walls and foundations. In that time, I have repeatedly raised this issue with the local Engineer, Transportation Department officials and the City Engineer, himself.

3.5 TONNE LIMIT TO BE INTRODUCED

I am pleased to report, that as a result, of this work, Dublin City Council’s Transportation Advisory Group at its meeting on April 30th last recommended the introduction of a 3.5 Tonne Limit along Beresford Street. This decision will result in a reduction in the number of especially large HGVs using the street. Transportation Engineers are now engaging with An Garda Siochana with regards the implementation and enforcement of this restriction.

WORKING TOGETHER TO BENEFIT LOCAL HOUSEHOLDERS

This decision has come about, through my work on your behalf as YOUR local City Councillor. I listened to what Beresford Street householders have said to me about the increase in HGVs and trucks using the street, compared to pre-pandemic levels. I visited homes of householders concerned that the constant vibrations arising from those HGVs crossing the speed ramps along street and the potential damage being done to properties and homes. I am convinced that the foundations of some homes have been damaged by years of Beresford Street being used by HGVs in such large numbers. Householders, therefore, have legitimate concerns about the structural soundness of their homes.

I hope the introduction of this 3.5 Tonne Limit on Beresford Street will help to ease the situation being experienced by Beresford Street householders and I would like to thank those residents who have worked with me in respect of achieving this decision.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any particular questions or queries arising from the details outlined above and the decision taken by the Transportation Advisory Group of Dublin City Council.
